Pixel Art Workshop
Berlin in Pixels is a hands-on, multidisciplinary workshop that invites participants to reinterpret Berlin's cultural and architectural identity through the expressive medium of pixel art. The workshop combines urban exploration with digital creativity, offering students from all majors the opportunity to translate real-world landmarks into stylized visual narratives. Through guided excursions to key sites such as the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, and Museum Island, participants gather visual material and contextual insights that inform their artistic process. The workshop addresses key themes including visual storytelling, digital illustration, color theory, and contemporary modes of representation. Students will learn pixel art fundamentals, composition techniques, and optional advanced approaches such as isometric pixel design or animated pixel sequences. By bridging traditional observation with digital craft, the workshop highlights how cities can be reimagined through minimal forms and constrained palettes, encouraging a fresh perspective on Berlin's urban fabric. Academically, the workshop introduces students to emerging digital aesthetics and visual reduction techniques that are increasingly relevant across design, media, gaming, branding, and contemporary art practices. Professionally, it equips participants with transferable skills in digital visualization, creative ideation, and visual communication that are critical in contemporary creative industries. The workshop responds to the growing trend of retro digital visual culture, where pixel art is experiencing renewed global relevance in animation, game design, visual branding, and digital storytelling. By offering a structured yet playful creative experience, Berlin in Pixels provides students with an opportunity to develop artistic literacy, explore cross-cultural design, and produce tangible outcomes. The final exhibition will showcase a curated collection of pixel artworks that reflect the students' reinterpretations of Berlin and celebrate their creativity.
