Redefining Marketplace Dynamics: The Consumers' Quest to Negotiate Identity and Power

Marketing research explores the complex terrain of marketplace dynamics. It focuses on consumers' active quest to navigate their roles through individual and collaborative efforts that challenge and reshape the power dynamics of consumption. From fashion to mobility, or digital realms to immigrant contexts, our work in this area uncovers how diverse groups strive to transform their market environments, for a better understanding how sustainability in marketing could be achieved.

Smart Materials and Structures

Research in this area has been on modeling, production, characterization, and application of shape memory polymers and alloys, as well as 3D/4D-printed smart structures, to develop innovative devices with customized responses under electro-thermo-mechanical stimuli. Shape-setting techniques have been developed to produce shape memory alloys in any desired form with predefined characteristics.

Investing in the Digital Age: Behavioral Finance, Financial Innovation, and Risk.

Finance research focuses on Behavioral Finance, Digital Finance, and Risk. Specifically, we explore how new technologies, such as social media, new brokerage platforms, or crowdfunding, change the way investors trade, interact, and perceive risks and opportunities of investments. Furthermore, we use state-of-the-art machine-learning techniques to make non-quantitative data, such as textual data from accounting reports or news and social media posts, usable and create economic value for companies, individual investors, and society.

Bridging Cultures Through Design: Redefining Roles, Shaping Societies, and Driving Sustainability

Design Research’s particular focus is on intercultural design and designers' evolving roles, the integration of cultural differences, the social and cultural impact of design, the aesthetic values in design practices, and sustainability in design processes. This research outlines the commitment to exploring how designers can bridge cultural differences, shape future societies, and redefine their roles as mediators and creative leaders in a globalized world.

Pulsed Ion Mobility Spectrometry

Ion Mobility Spectrometry is a powerful technique used to analyze substances in environmental sciences, but also for security applications in work places, airports, etc. We combine gas chromatography and pulsed ionization principles to enhance the analytical information, together with theoretical quantum-chemical calculations.

Graphic design as a tool for social transformation

The Graphic Design program at the German International University Berlin combines scientific research and design practice to explore the role of design in social, cultural and institutional contexts. The research focuses on topics that define graphic design as an integral part of social and cultural transformation processes, such as: design aesthetics that shape values, norms and cultural identities, the role of typography in an intercultural context and the political dimension of design, that influences political structures, opinions and discourses
